The Phoenix Foundation

These guys are huge in New Zealand and have been for a while. I was introduced to them by a small French Canadian cook on a sailboat in Newport this past summer. Nice and poppy. Give a listen.

Album of The Week: Best Coast - "Sun Was High (So Was I) - Single"

You know those songs that you have to listen to a couple times before you start liking it and after a while it becomes one of your favorites. Well, in the past week I have grown to love this single.

Started simply as a recording project between two friends, Bethany Cosentino and Bob Bruno have managed to create some very catchy tunes that to me stand out among the hundreds of new bands going for the Surf/Lo-Fi beach steez. "Sun Was High (So Was I)'s" vocal melody has been stuck in my head all week, and I havn't stopped playing this single since I got it.

Best Coast has yet to release an LP and have released several EPs, "Sun Was High" being one of them. Below are links to myspace, the bands blog, and a stream of the track "Sun Was High (So Was I)", enjoy!

Yeasayer - Odd Blood (Released Feb 9)

Sorry for the two posts in a row, but this album rocks my tits off. Buy it, smell it, eat it, steal it.

Unbunny

Unbunny is the moniker of Jarid Del Deo. He released this album (Black Strawberries) in 2002 from a small label in New Hampshire. His music sounds almost like the marriage of Neil Young and Neutral Milk Hotel. This is one of those rare down tempo songs that still manages to be uplifting. Enjoy.

Album of The Week: Good God! Born Again Funk

Numero Group, a record/multi-media format company, recently released their third album on the 'Good God!' series, entitled "Good God! Born Again Funk. A collection of gospel inspired funk songs, the album features a compilation of hits recorded sometime between 1970 and 1985.

This album is classic. I haven't heard an album in a while with this much soul in it. Religious or not, there is something powerful about this music that just makes you feel good. Below are links to the album's page on the Numero Group where you can stream and buy the album. Personal favorites are "Like a Ship", "Packing A Grip", and "The Same Thing It Took".

***The album if available for sale on Itunes as well as on the Numero Group site***

We Are The New Standard

I recently got an email from Clement & Co, a media blog that supports rising artists in youth culture, about a short documentary they did on electronic artist Free The Robots. I stumbled upon Free The Robots a couple of years ago and really liked his EP (only album to date). He was one of the first artists that I ever heard incorporate jazz into electronica. The video is a promotion for the release of his new album, which is supposed to arrive sometime in 2010. Check out the video and download one of the highlights off his 2007 release, Jazzhole...

Flying Lotus - Fall In Love (J Dilla Tribute)

About a year back Flying Lotus remixed Slum Village's "Fall In Love", a track that Dilla produced when he was with Slum V. I absolutely love this track. The way Flylo mixed the vocal samples towards the end of the track is killer! Kick back and listen...

New jj - "My Way" ft. Lil Wayne

Just found out about this little jem this morning and am stoked! I've read/seen jj all over music blogs but never got into them until I heard this track. Recently leaked, "My Way" is a super chilled out track featuring vocal samples from Lil Wayne and Charles Manson (interesting combo). I'm not a huge fan of the auto-tune stuff but can dig it in Lil Wayne's verse.

The band is set to release a new album March 10th with their US record label Secretly Canadian, and will be touring with The xx in March and April. Below is a playable link of "My Way", enjoy!

Dr. Dog - "The Beach"

Just started listening to these guys. Good. Clean. Rock and roll. Delta Spirit toured with them a few years ago and I think that some of the raw, scratchy vocal stylings of Dr. Dog rubbed off them.

Album of The Week: Hudson Mohawke - Polyfolk Dance EP

This week's Album Of The Week goes to Hudson Mohawke's Polyfolk Dance EP. Blending electronic textures with hip-hop drum and bass, Hudson Mohawke progressively mixes two of my favorite genres of music; Hip-hop and electronic. Hudson Mohawke's Polyfolk Dance EP is an intricate, yet accessible album that to me truly represents modern day electronica.

Although I am a fan of every track on the album, the first three tracks stand out. The opening track, "Polkadot Blues" is an upbeat tune with layers of brightly toned synth and a bumping bass line (definitely some Passion Pit steez goin on with this one). "Monde", the second track on the album, is spacier and more chilled out. Its got a killer bass line though, one that stands out amongst the album and makes the song. Possibly my favorite and most amped out track on the album is "Overnight", the third track on the EP. Depending on how you hear it, one could argue that this track is straight hip-hop, as it features a busy drum loop backed by some nasty cut up vocals.

Hudson Mohawkes album features 6 songs all of which I enjoy. If your a fan of electronic and or hip-hop, check the album out. Attached is the track "Polkadot Blues", as well as links to his myspace and record label, Warp Records, Enjoy!
